A day spent at the spa resort Terme di Premia bathing in the salubrious water, pampered by the treatments at the wellness centre, submerged in the quiet of the mountains, is a truly restorative experience.
The ancient Romans transmitted the spa culture as a means of caring for body and mind. Nowadays, it is more important than ever to take a break from the frenetic pace of everyday life in order to dedicate a few necessary and revitalising hours to our well-being.
When long winters sap our strength and deprive us of our customary energy, we can always arrange a day at the ultra modern complex of Terme di Premia, located in the heart of the Antigorio valley among green fields, walser houses and little churches in the architecture typical of the Ossola region.
A papal bull dating back to the 1500s confirms the presence of a hot water spring which gave off vapour during the harsh freezing winter months. The tradition of thermal baths in these places has ancient roots and has been reevaluated by the construction of an ultra modern building offering many comforts.
As you soak lazily in the outdoor thermal baths you can absorb the silence of nature, interrupted only by the crashing and tumbling of the waters coming from the Longia spring, which bubble forth, naturally hot, at about 42°C.
While swimming in the large pool by the garden, you may admire the snow-clad mountains and the frozen waterfalls and wonder at the cloud of salubrious vapour rising from the water while the surrounding fields are covered in snow.
The indoor baths are inside an architectural structure made of wood, stone, and glass partitions. This bright, cosy environment is furnished with chaise longues where you may recline between one bath and another. HydroMassage beds, vascular massage therapy and relaxing water jets for the cervical spine guarantee further curative effects. Anyone wishing to avail of the SPA can book all sorts of massage, use the saunas or the Turkish bath and have themselves pampered with fantastic beauty treatments, ranging from emotional showers to hay baths, holistic massage to relaxation therapy.
Completely regenerated and brimming with positive energy, it is worth pausing to enjoy the spectacular scenery on leaving the spa baths: the surrounding nature appears majestic in its beauty with the river Toce flowing down the valley and the typical panorama associated with Alpine areas greets the eye. There are many interesting stopovers on the way downhill: first and foremost, I recommend taking the time to visit the magnificent church “San Gaudenzio” in Baceno, a splendid religious building, the interior of which reveals walls entirely covered in impressive frescoes.
There are trails from both Premia and Baceno leading to the Orridi di Uriezzo, an incredible cluster of cavities and hollows carved into the rock by the action of torrents throughout the last Ice Age.
Before returning to La Darbia, why not purchase something appetizing on your way past the Latteria (Dairy shop) in Crodo where they sell the famous cheese “Bettelmatt”.
With so many positive emotions and some delicious provisions one returns to La Darbia really satisfied….meanwhile realizing that wellness is not a luxury…
or rather that the real luxury is wellness in itself !
That's all for now!
