When Christmas arrives, it arrives! Joyous, sparkling, euphoric, warm and enveloping, but also bursting with events and rich in spirituality and reminiscence.

Again this year, magic repeats itself. Now to us : with the arrival of December we are all infected with a spirit of joyous euphoria. The Christmas atmosphere has officially started and we allow ourselves to be carried away by a series of rituals, both traditional and modern, increasingly evocative. The festive atmosphere creeps into our days, which are filled with gifts to wrap, decorations and illuminations, greetings cards, trees and cribs ... We want to sip mulled wine on the street, listen to Christmas choirs, walk in the snow and, of course, taste a slice of panettone, which in Italy is the Christmas dessert par excellence.

Here then are some ideas to spend pleasant days in the Advent period, whilst waiting to celebrate, strictly in the family, perhaps in front of the fireplace, on December 25.

Until the end of the month, in the village of Ornavasso, in a former underground quarry that was once active for the extraction of precious marble (the one used for the construction of the Duomo of Milan) we can visit Santa Claus himself, with his long red coat and white beard.

His characteristic dwelling is inside a grotto that can be reached through about two hundred meters of tunnels: the good mythical king of parties, surrounded by his helpers "twergi", the elves of the Walser tradition, awaits the children for a precious souvenir photo and for the delivery of their Christmas letter. In the park outside the grotto there are many attractions: shows and animations, authentic reindeer and a large crib.

Even the typical Christmas markets are now spreading everywhere, but some are definitely unmissable, such as the famous Santa Maria Maggiore Market. With its 200 exhibitors and ten wooden chalets, framed by snow-covered peaks and suggestive Christmas lights, this market is one of the largest in Northern Italy and attracts many visitors each year.

To accompany the visitors along the path of the center there are the typical braziers burning fir logs: a tradition both visually pleasing and practical in terms of warmth.

A stroll through the Christmas stalls can also be the perfect occasion to taste the famous "stinchéet", thin wafers similar to crèpes cooked on iron plates and seasoned with butter, or the "gnoch da la chigiàa" both dishes of the peasant cuisine, to be served with the fragrant mulled wine or the strong vigezzino coffee. The whole area is decorated in a festive way, the Horns of the Alps play for tourists and the craftsmen open their shops to show off their traditional crafts.

Another hugely successful attraction is ice skating rinks: in Arona they set up a very large rink, beautifully staged in a delightful square overlooking the lake. The beauty is that between a slip and a slide you can make your way around the rink admiring the sumptuousness of the decorations and sipping a cup of hot chocolate near the traditional tree lit by a thousand colored lights ...

Other events not to be missed? The illuminated fir in the square of Orta (just in front of the Island of San Giulio), the historic crib of Monte Mesma, the markets of Macugnaga (at the foot of Monte Rosa), the illuminations of the "Luci d ' Artist »in Turin and the famous patronal feast of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan.

On the other hand, Christmas is the most magical time of the year, every event is an emotion, the important thing is to enjoy the attractions, be together with loved ones, exchange kind gestures and live quiet, peaceful days.

In reality, the spirit of Christmas lies in the simplest of things ...
