A mountain consecrated by religious devotion and an artistic heritage of inestimable value: here we are in Varallo, the "new Jerusalem".

A beautiful sunny day. That is all you need to visit the Sacro Monte di Varallo. Nothing else ... You really don't require anything else!
Simply the correct light to admire the grandiose monumental complex and take some beautiful photographs.

In the heart of Valsesia, an hour's drive from our La Darbia, stands this extraordinary site, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and visited every year by thousands of people, believers or not.

What was made from the end of the fifteenth century was really a "new Jerusalem" as was the intention of brother Bernardino Caimi who, on his return from the Holy Land, wanted to recreate the places of Christ's life on Mount Tre Croci. Thus was born this magnificent structure for religious devotion that was en riched in the following years by the precious work of the artist Gaudenzio Ferrari, one of the greatest exponents of Piedmontese painting and sculpture of the sixteenth century.

During the Counter-Reformation, illustrious figures such as San Carlo Borromeo and the bishop of Novara, Carlo Bascapé, took to heart the fate of the Sacred Mount of Varallo, which became a place capable of involving and thrilling Christian pilgrims. We must not forget that in the past religious buildings and sacred paintings represented teaching instruments for the many illiterate faithful, a true catechism that illustrated the stories related to the Bible and the Gospels.

Even today when we climb from Varallo (by car or through a panoramic cableway) we welcome a serene and almost 'magnetic' environment with a green park and a spectacular view of the Sesia river valley.

Go past the Porta Aurea and reach the large central square where the Basilica is located and where there is also the Fountain of the Risen, whose jets symbolically recall the wounds of our Lord. Along a guided tour there are then forty-five frescoed chapels that house marvelous wooden and terracotta full size statues. Characters that seem alive in their simplicity, realistic figures taken from the daily life of the time: mothers with children, pets and mountain goats.

What is certain is that the Sacred Mount of Varallo never disappoints. Every year I decide to come back and every year I seem to discover something new and exciting. I like to breathe an atmosphere of calm recollection, to admire the masterpieces of art, to walk calmly in a place of supreme beauty and let myself be infected by the spiritual energy that this place can transmit.

Recovering our inner sunshine is an exercise to cultivate, to glow with a light and carefree joy.
