Every September for more than ten years back, Nick and his mother Loraine leave Bristol to come and spend a few days on Lake Orta; last week we invited them to our house to be our guests for a dish of risotto with mushrooms, so we also had the opportunity to chat over a glass of good wine.
Nick is a character, every year he leaves us with a proverb or “pearl of wisdom”.
This time we were sitting around the table talking about money (and he is an expert on the topic of money) when he came out with the following statement:
“Never invest your life savings in the stock market, because when stocks begin going up you'll always be the last one to know anything about it. But that's nothing, the real problem is when the stock market starts doing badly ….. would you like to know who the last person to discover is will be?”.
Well, if ever you have tried investing in the stock market, you will probably have no trouble understanding the meaning of his statement.
Instead last year we talked about houses (and he's an expert on the topic of houses) and this is what he said:
“To assess the value of a house it must have three fundamental characteristics:
n.1 – Location
n.2 – Location
n.3 – Location!”
Perhaps this English saying is a bit more difficult to understand because the term LOCATION may be interpreted in many different ways: for some people it may mean being far from the chaos and traffic of a busy road or the noise of a railway line whereas, for others, a perfect location might signify being surrounded by the greenery of a beautiful garden away from the city smog or, for yet another person, it may mean being able to enjoy a wonderful view from a window.
If I were to try and explain what an ideal location is for me, I would have to cite an example.
If you are guests at La Darbia try sitting on the bench in the vineyard at the end of the path one evening at sunset…. no, let me try with an even better example: let yourselves be awakened early on a spring morning by the chirping of the birds, then get out of bed, prepare your favourite breakfast at ease, go and savour it in comfort on the terrace facing the lake and while you await the first rays of sunshine to light up Monte Rosa, let the chimes of the bells in Sacro Monte greet you and wish you a marvellous day.
Do you get what I mean?
