La Darbia is in Vacciago, in the municipality of Ameno, a tiny antiquated village immersed in the verdant hills overlooking Lake Orta. Set among wooded mountains and surrounded by a riviera rich in history and art, Lake Orta is the most evocative of Italian lake basins.

Vacciago and Ameno

Ameno and Vacciago have been renowned tourist destinations since the 1800s; their numerous stately mansions and noble villas are a characteristic feature and may be visted on the occasion of the annual exhibition “Studi Aperti”. Of particular interest is Casa Calderara, which houses a precious collection of Contemporary Art and the beautiful Franciscan convent dating back to the 1600s, built on Monte Mesma.

Enclosed by wooded mountainside and encircled by shores rich in history and art, Lake Orta is one of the most evocative spots in Italy.

Orta and Island of San Giulio

The most illustrious and representative place in the whole area is Orta San Giulio, a small charming medieval town, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of Italy. Built on the slopes of the ridge overhead, Sacro Monte and its twenty chapels tell the life story of Saint Francis of Assisi; a gem of architecture, culture and spirituality, it has been declared a Unesco heritage site. 

The Island of San Giulio with its splendid Romanesque basilica and the monastery of the Benedictine order lies suspended over the waters of the lake.

Sacro Monte of Orta San Giulio

Dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, for Nietzsche one of the "most evocative places in the world", it has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries, a must for those who want to immerse themselves in a nature full of spirituality. From the Belvedere, a breathtaking view.

Monte Mesma

Admire the surrounding landscape, stroll through its chestnut woods and visit the Franciscan Convent at its summit (600 m). Do not hesitate to knock on the door, the friars will open up for you and you can admire the famous cloister of the Monastery. Monte Mesma is the ideal place for a trip encompassing nature, art and spirituality.

Borgo di Pella

The romantic little town Pella is on the other side of the lake, dominated by the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, built on the rocky granite promontory jutting out over the lake.

Just a few kilometres further on, you can visit Lake Maggiore, an area rich in history and artistic achievements.

Mottarone rises up between the two lakes; the view from the top is of incomparable beauty as it stretches across the Maritime Alps and Monte Rosa and spans the territory incorporating the seven lakes.

Alagna Valsesia, Monte Rosa

The Monte Rosa massif, which can be accessed from Alagna in nearby Valsesia, offers both romantic and evocative destinations with snow capped peaks in sight and hair-raising climbs on the eastern face of Punta Dufour, the second-highest peak in Europe.

For mountain lovers, there are several famous destinations, all easily reached. Val Formazza and the Toce Waterfalls, Val Grande and Val d'Ossola, Premia Hot Springs and many nature walks.

Toce Waterfalls
