A very special mode of transport leads from Laveno to the top of the Sasso di Ferro. All to the benefit of the landscape.

The “bidonvia”? No, I had never really tried it ... this is why I close the cabin door with a decisive thud and, with my heart in my throat, I climb aboard this unusual means of transport, which reminds me of certain cableways that can be seen in adventure movies.

For about fifty years the Laveno telecabin has been able to reach the summit of the famous Sasso di Ferro in about fifteen minutes, at an altitude of about 1100 meters. The departure station of the funicular is located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore and the entire cableway, which has undergone modernization several times, is now part of the panorama of the lake.

Excited and fearless (I am feeling brave because I usually suffer from vertigo ...) I climb upwards suspended from a rope, inside an open "bin" or bucket, with the wind blowing my hair ... Flying over the roofs of the houses, crossing the foliage of trees, while hearing the tolling of Sunday bells in the distance, I really feel as if I am being transported on an adventurous journey. But the journey is definitely comfortable and safe, comfortable and exciting.

The panorama gradually widens before my eyes and my gaze goes farther and farther, until it embraces the entire profile of Lake Maggiore: so I can admire the verdant territory that stretches between Piedmont and Lombardy, between rolling hills and lakes with deep blue water, with the magnificent Alps in the background.

Cars from afar seem to me as small as toys, the Swiss mountains are already covered with snow, the lakes of Varese sparkle and Monte Rosa peeps out majestically. Someone informs me that on clear and windy days from here you can see (with a telescope) Malpensa airport and the spires of Milan Cathedral!

From the top of Poggio Sant’Elsa, moreover, many paths branch off for lovers of trekking and mountain biking, while the more adventurous launch themselves with a hang glider or paraglide from the top of the mountain and prop up the sky with their colored sails.

While I savor the breathtaking view, I take some pictures to post on social media. And in the meantime, behind me, the comings and goings of the green buckets continues cheerfully, as if to remind me that the descent awaits me ...

But meanwhile I still enjoy this wonderful panorama a little because, as Virginia Woolf used to say, "a beautiful landscape is like a verse of poetry".
