WALTER'S LAKES

I almost feel envious as I turn the shiny pages of the latest volume published by Walter. A certain envy for those marvellous days spent gliding over the water, the morning haze and the glowing sunsets, the clouds of fog he saw arise from the lake and the evening lights reflected on the water!

Envy for that sense of freedom he undoubtedly experienced throughout his solo voyage. Also for his talent and that sensitivity which enables him to capture emotion and image in one single shot.  No doubt as a talented photographer, dedicated to the beautiful experiences of life, Walter Zerla 's adventure is something unique. He is a sensitive and ungrudging artist capable of expressing things in a nutshell and of transmitting those impressions to us. In 170 snapshots he communicates two whole years spent aboard a sailboat called the "Caipirinha Fantini" as helmsman, back and forth between Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore

Ploughing through the waters of these Alpine valleys he realized a photographic and scientific project, whilst also raising awareness as to the health of the lakes, in collaboration with the CNR in Verbania. As a result, 200 pages have been produced and translated into five different languages to date.

I must confide that every now and then Walter comes to La Darbia to visit us, makes us a present of one of his extraordinary photographs and chats willingly with us in our cellar over a glass of good wine. It's always a pleasure to listen to him and enjoy his photographs : anything but envy, it's simply a charming and enchanting encounter!
