Many of our La Darbia friends refer to us for advice about restaurants and other trendy locales around Lake Orta. There can be no better way to crown an otherwise perfect holiday than by dining overlooking the lake.

Naturally, Orta offers a wide choice of exquisite restaurants and many of these face onto the main square right opposite the island of San Giulio. As one of the best places in the historic centre I suggest Ai Due Santi, located in the interior of an ancient mansion: elegant and tastefully furnished, its excellent cuisine combines lake and land, it boasts a wide range of wines and offers impeccable service.

Il cucchiaio di legno is another nice little place, an informal and comforable farmhouse, which offers traditional dishes typical of Piedmont. Situated in Legro, in the countryside surrounding Orta, it has a spacious dining room for its guests and a large outdoor area. The menu is based on seasonal produce and uses genuine ingredients, most of which come from the proprietors own farmstead. Cold cured meats, fresh eggs, homemade bread, organic jams and honey are always available for the guest's table.

For a sunset aperitif or a candlelight dinner, I think that the restaurant Luci sul lago is perfect; it is situated in a charming location with a wonderful terrace overlooking the lake.

During the day you can stay at their beach area equipped with umbrellas, pedalos, kayaks, and with a "chiringuito" where drinks, cold dishes and ice cream are served. At nightfall the atmosphere becomes more romantic thanks to the soft music and the lights reflecting in the lake. An advice? Their pizza with courgette flowers and anchovy is really delicious!

Pella, on the western side of the lake, also has quite a few interesting places. We ourselves recently had dinner at a renowned restaurant with a wide range of dishes based on fish: it is called the Imbarcadero and is situated at the far end of the main square, just a few metres from the pontoon where boats are moored. The Imbarcadero restaurant is bright and modern and has a cosy atmosphere, while the dishes served both at lunch and in the evening are prepared with the utmost care and attention.

To conclude our review I recommend a restaurant a little further away with a magnificent view over Lake Maggiore and the famous Borromee islands. It is easy to get there, though it is essential to book in advance as it is always busy both in winter and summer. It is called La Rampolina, a superb little place, something in between a traditional Italian inn or tavern(osteria) and a regional wine bar (enoteca), the ambience is informal and the air pervaded by the smell of homemade produce.

Davide warmly welcomes each and every guest making them feel at home and treated as though they were friends, meanwhile serving them with maximum hospitality. After having tasted the delicious dishes, you may purchase salami and cold meats, cheese, wine and other specialities and happily take them home if you wish.

At this point in time, there is nothing more to be said other than hope you enjoy your food! Eat with gusto and have yourselves a delightful gastronomic experience… as everyone knows, Italy and good food go hand in hand!
